Athletics and Fitness

African Leadership Academy is committed to maintaining an active and healthy community. The ALA Athletics Department stresses the importance of physical fitness and exercise. We believe that a healthy body helps grow a healthy mind, and all students at ALA are required to participate in either the athletics or wellness programs. We also encourage faculty and staff members to contribute to a variety of physical activities as coaches and mentors.

The Athletics Department manages a number of competitive sports, offered year-round, including football, basketball, volleyball, dance and ultimate Frisbee. Competitive sports teams practice at least twice per week and play matches against local schools, athletic clubs and universities. Gym class, a section of the wellness program, is required for all students who do not participate in a competitive sport.  Meeting once every two weeks, gym class teaches students basic fitness skills and provides a positive environment for students to exercise and have fun.  The Athletics Department also supervises recreational sports, which include tennis, table tennis, dance, yoga and martial arts.

As in other parts of the Academy, the Athletics Department strives to place leadership at the core of its programs.  Captains and coaches of both competitive and recreational sports fulfill essential leadership duties and the Athletics Department coordinates with the Leadership Department to stress personal leadership in all aspects of the athletics and wellness programs. In addition to emphasizing the physical well-being of our students, the ALA Athletics Department also provides valuable learning experiences for our student’s leadership and team-oriented development.
