The Global Scholars Program (GSP) at African Leadership Academy is an intensive, nineteen-day, global leadership program for a select group of secondary school students from across the world.  Built around ALA’s unique Entrepreneurial Leadership and African studies curriculum, GSP prepares future leaders to explore their potential to create widespread change in Africa – and throughout the world.

Participants in this exciting leadership program practice leadership by working in social ventures in the Johannesburg community, learn from ‘fireside chats’ with prominent entrepreneurial leaders in South Africa, build a global network with other young leaders from around the world and discover the history, beauty and diversity of Africa.

Develop as an Entrepreneurial Leader

Modelled on African Leadership Academy's innovative curricula in Entrepreneurial Leadership, the Global Scholars Program will deeply engage you in issues that significantly affect Africa's future. You will identify and develop innovative solutions to challenging problems - and you will learn to implement these solutions. You will put your leadership development and teamwork skills to the test with thought-provoking activities and exercises. You will also learn from Activists, Entrepreneurs and Educators who visit this unique summer leadership programme as guest speakers. Previous guest speakers at GSP include King Molotlegi, the King of the Royal Bafokeng Nation; Alan Knott-Craig Jr, owner of Mxit & World of Avatar; Jassandra Nyker, Senior Vice President of PCG Asset Management.

Broaden Your Perspective on Africa

Discover the history, beauty, diversity, and energy that is Africa by spending nineteen days on our campus in South Africa. Through your African Studies discussions, your excursions to the Apartheid Museum and your explorations of the Cradle of Humankind and the Pilanesberg National Park, ALA will expose you to Africa in ways you have never imagined. You will build a powerful network of friends and leaders from across Africa and beyond, and you will learn from outstanding leaders and entrepreneurs at the forefront of the critical issues facing the continent today.

2012 GSP Scholars share some of their experiences on their blog.

Engage in Service Learning Projects

The Global Scholars Program offers a unique opportunity for its participants to move beyond ‘volunteering’ and explore leadership in action.

You will contribute meaningful value to social ventures launched by young, socially-conscious leaders like yourself. At the Kliptown Youth Program, you will learn from social entrepreneur Thulani Madondo and tutor at-risk students in an after-school program. At Emthonjeni Day Care, an organization founded by African Leadership Academy alumnus Mbali Zondi, you will provide support in their daily activities aimed at providing a solid educational foundation to at-risk children.
