Partner and Manager of Bowman Gilfillan’s Employee Benefits Group

David Geral is a partner at Bowman Gilfillan Attorneys, one of South Africa’s largest and most respected law firms. He is the founding partner of the Employee Benefits Group and he has specialised in pensions, healthcare and employee benefits law and in related aspects of mergers and acquisitions since 2000.

In the benefits area, David regularly advises local corporations and private as well as industry retirement funds, medical schemes and their service providers, in the fields of governance, contracting, compliance and dispute resolution. He has represented and advised funds, schemes, administrators and participating employers in relation to matters before the Pension Funds Adjudicator, the Council for Medical Schemes, the Competition Commission, the FSB Appeal Board, the Equality Court and in the High Court. He is the contributing author of the Pensions title in Lexis Nexis Law of South Africa (LAWSA).

David regularly advises in relation to restraints of trade (non-compete covenants), post-retirement medical funding and equity-linked incentive schemes. He often conducts due diligences in respect of these matters and has advised a number of multi-national and local companies in various merger and acquisition transactions or IPO’s, from an employment and benefits perspective.

David develops and presents training for trustees and participating employers in the benefits environment.

He serves on Bowman Gilfillan’s pro-bono Committee and is the Lex Mundi pro-bono Committee’s Regional Chairperson for Africa.
