Jake graduated with a degree in philosophy from Pacific Lutheran University in 2011. Pursuing his passion for youth development, he interned with the Foundation for Sustainable Development in Udaipur, India, helping to strengthen the managerial and organizational capacities of grassroots NGOs. Jake then moved to Hargeisa, Somaliland to work at the Abaarso School of Science and Technology, where he served as a Writing teacher, Dean of Male Students, and Director of After-School Tutoring. Jake oversaw the codification of many of the start-up school’s non-academic policies and procedures, and he developed the Writing curricula for grades 10 and 11.

In 2013, Jake took time to pursue his three passions: writing, photography, and travel. He spent the year independently exploring historical sites in Ethiopia, backcountry trails through the Nepali Himalayas, and rural villages in India.

Jake joined ALA’s Writing and Rhetoric department in 2014 and has a strong interest in developing the academy’s programs to support English language learners.

Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, Jake enjoys running, playing guitar, and practicing Vipassana meditation.
