Scott Rubin, Physics and Mathematics Faculty
Scott Rubin joins ALA from Hillcrest School in Kenya. Scott grew up in the USA and is a
published scientist with BS degrees in Geology and Physics and an MS degree in Geophysics. He has
two young sons who are both aspiring physicists. “I want my boys to grow up loving Africa as much
as I do,” Scott says, “as a place with vast beauty and unimaginable potential.” Scott began
teaching in 1995 at a tiny school in the Western Province of Kenya, which he calls “the most
rewarding experience of my life up to that time. I fell in love with the people and the nation of
Kenya. I also fell in love with teaching. Since then, I have taught nearly nonstop at the secondary
school and university levels. I believe teachers learn as much as their students, and my favorite
lesson is one in which I'm asked a question I've never heard before; a question that makes me stop
and think and reevaluate my own assumptions.”
