A Day in the Life
What could your life be like at African Leadership Academy? Imagine. . .
|
6:45 AM
|
Wake up to the sound of kwaito music on your alarm clock
radio. |
7:45 AM
|
After washing up, getting dressed, and reviewing your schedule for
the day, you walk with your roommate and friends from your dormitory to the ALA dining hall, where
you enjoy a breakfast of brown toast, eggs, and fresh orange juice. |
|
8:15 AM
|
You walk to your morning classes. On this particular morning, you
discuss various approaches to fighting malaria in your African studies class, and you present your
report on the usage and effectiveness of insecticide-treated bed nets. |
|
10:45 AM
|
After your African studies and maths classes, you join your
classmates for a mid-morning break in the Dining Hall. |
11:00 AM
|
You walk to the world-class ALA science laboratory for your
chemistry lab session, in which you are synthesizing acetylsalicylic acid – the pain and fever
reliever you know as aspirin! – from basic chemicals. |
1:00 PM
|
You walk leisurely across the quad with your best friends to
lunch. Over lunch, you discuss the possibility of starting a Social Entrepreneurs’ Club on
campus. |
|
1:45 PM
|
After lunch, you join your group in the design laboratory for a
brainstorming session for this month’s design challenge. Under the guidance of your chemistry
instructor and team mentor, your team seeks to design an inexpensive way to increase the supply of
clean water in a rural community. |
|
3:00 PM
|
You walk to football practice on the sports fields. |
|
5:00 PM
|
Football practice is over, and you walk back to your dorm to work
on the lab report for your chemistry class before heading to dinner. Just before dinner, you call
your mentor – the publisher of one of Africa’s leading newspapers – to confirm the time you are
meeting for coffee on Sunday. |
|
7:30 PM
|
After dinner, you attend a guest lecture in the ALA auditorium.
Today’s speaker is a successful African entrepreneur who built one of the most important health
care providers on the continent. You are excited to learn how he built his organization – your
family often visits one of his clinics near your home! |
|
9:00 PM
|
You meet in the dormitory with other members of the “Green Team”,
an environmental service club you started on campus. You plan the following afternoon’s
environmental awareness activities, which include visiting two local business leaders to discuss
the environmental impact and cost savings they can achieve by switching to high-efficiency light
bulbs. |
|
9:45 PM
|
You head to your room, where your roommate is writing a short
essay for her writing class on her computer. You also switch on your computer to finish your lab
report. |
|
11:00 PM
|
You switch off your computer and desk lamp and turn on your
reading light to enjoy a book before falling asleep. |
