On October 7, a new documentary series will air on SABC that explores African excellence in a variety of sectors. The first episode is focused on Education, particularly a decolonised one, and what that could or should look like. We are excited that ALA is featured as a shining example of how a new relevant, African education approach is evolving.
Through the process of making their film, we got to know the founders of Farisani Creations, the film and TV production company who have identified that important conversations must happen in South Africa particularly on a range of issues, and want to drive that through the making of their films. Their time at ALA learning about our approaches and interacting with our community has inspired them, and they have provided many of our staff and students a platform to discuss and share important viewpoints – just as they do on campus every day.
Importantly, the film does not necessarily represent the views of the Academy. Our community was a powerful lens through which the filmmakers could explore the really topical, important and urgent issue of decolonised education. Our community is full of many voices on all topics, including education and history. And we’re very proud of the alumni, students and teachers interviewed as they explored these perspectives boldly on film. We hope it drives conversation across classrooms and living rooms – including our own.

About ‘Made In Africa’
‘Made in Africa’ is a four-episode documentary series exploring a diverse range of some of Africa’s most pertinent issues. The key objective of the series is to tell African stories from an African perspective and to encourage dialogue and pro-activeness towards finding African Solutions to African Problems. ‘Made in Africa’ does this through showcasing exceptional African people and institutions that are currently addressing issues in an effective manner and contributing to the positive progression of the African continent.
The series seeks to create greater awareness of African excellence by placing it on a platform that is accessible to the majority of African people. Positive representation matters, and this show aims to inform and inspire Africans to believe in and strive for greatness through seeing fellow Africans do the same.
The episodes will air weekly on Sundays at 9:30pm on SABC 2 from October 7 to October 28 2018.
