Mteto Nyati has been the managing director of Microsoft South Africa since September 1, 2008, arriving at Microsoft after a 12-year career at IBM, where he held a series of senior executive roles, including that of an executive director of IBM’s South African operations.
Mr. Nyathi was most recently the director of IBM Global Technology Services (GTS) for South and Central Africa, where he turned around GTS, making it into a double digit revenue and profit engine, causing him be awarded IBM’s prestigious Golden Circle for 2008.
Prior to IBM, Mr.Nyathi served as the Director of SMB Channels for Europe, Middle East and Africa at IBM European Headquarters in Paris, where he consistently delivered double-digit growth over a four-year period while establishing IBM as a significant player in the small and medium business market segment. While there, he als achieved a revenue plan of $3 billion through business partners.
Mr. Nyathi matriculated from St John’s College in Umtata in 1980. In 1982, he was given a scholarship by Afrox to study Mechanical Engineering, and duly achieved a BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Natal (South Africa) in 1985. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to study towards a Masters’ degree in engineering in Germany in 1985, which he had to decline on account of his mother’s poor health at the time. In 2004, he was named as one of the Yale University’s World Fellows on Global Leadership.
