Maya Schkolne

African Studies and Writing & Rhetoric Teaching Faculty

Maya works with the Writing and Rhetoric and African Studies Departments to actively contribute to the development of the internal curriculum, teach and mentor ALA students.

Maya teaches students how to meaningfully engage with texts and each other, as well as communicate verbal and written responses to a range of audiences. Classroom content is tied to the teaching of research methods and Modern Language Association (MLA) citation. Maya also focuses on theories particular to the curriculum, such as ‘othering’ for the First Year Omang class on identity, or ‘intersectionality’ for the African Studies Social Justice class.

Prior to her role at ALA, Maya was an intern at the Afro-Middle East Centre in Johannesburg in 2013, during which time she copy-edited books and documents and offered qualitative research on socio-political issues in the North Africa and Middle East region. From 2014 – 2015, she also interned at the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation in Cape Town, during which time she provided peer-review commentary for the International Journal of Transitional Justice.

At ALA, Maya leads the Research component for the International Relations Council and its accompanying ALA Model African Union (MAU) Program. Each year, she coaches and chaperones 10 students to attend the Model United Nations Program at Harvard, and mentors these students and others to become Chairpeople – leading students from across the continent, for MAU. Maya is also the faculty facilitator for News Decoder, an international journalistic platform for students from around the world.
