DR. MARY SHUTTLEWORTH is the Founder and President of Youth for Human Rights International. Born and raised in apartheid South Africa, she saw first-hand the devastating effects of the lack of the most basic human rights. During her studies and travels, she realized that issues of discrimination reached far beyond the borders of her own country. As a result, Dr. Shuttleworth believes that education is the long-term solution to improving conditions, and this realization caused earned her Doctorate in Education from Fielding Graduate University in California.

Dr. Shuttleman started her first non-profit corporation and private school in Los Angeles in 1998. In 2001, the non-profit corporation Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI) was started. The purpose of YHRI is to teach youth about human rights, specifically the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. To rapidly expand the organization and reach youth around the globe, she has collaborated with like-minded individuals, groups, and organizations locally, nationally, and internationally. The organization now has more than 180 clubs, groups and chapters in over 80 countries around the world.

Since the founding of the organization, YHRI delegates from around the world have been guests at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and UNICEF office in Los Angeles.
