Richard Okello

Richard Okello co-founded and manages Sango Capital, an institutional private equity business backed by leading global investors that takes a 360-degree approach to African private equity. Sango invests in funds, direct transactions and bespoke vehicles structured alongside select private equity investors. Prior to Sango Capital, Richard was a principal at Makena Capital Management, a $20 billion global private endowment, where he managed multiple portfolios that were substantially allocated to emerging markets and oversaw the research into new investment ideas.

Prior to that, Richard was a partner at Bridgewater Associates, a $150 billion global hedge fund. Richard sits on several African fund advisory boards and African corporate boards as well as the boards of Human Horizons USA, and the African Leadership Foundation. Richard was educated in Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States, receiving an MBA Hons. from Pace University and a BA (Honors Program) Economics & Public Policy from Swarthmore College. He attended the UWC of the Atlantic in Wales on scholarship.
