#GivingTuesday began in the United States six years ago as a simple idea to create a day of giving after the barrage of spending that accompanies both Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The concept was to rally individuals, communities and organizations across the world around one common purpose: to celebrate and encourage giving. The online movement has since mobilized tens of millions of dollars for deserving nonprofits and causes.
So why does African Leadership Academy participate? The act of philanthropy showcases the kindness, entrepreneurship and community spirit that already lives in ALA’s students and the ALA community. Last year, ALA’s committed alumni led an online giving movement, #ALAGivesBack, to demonstrate their gratitude for their ALA experience and support future students of the Academy. Raising nearly $10,000, the campaign was a resounding success. This year, we’re asking ALA’s global community of supporters to follow the lead of our students.
“Research shows that individuals who give philanthropically are happier, more fulfilled, more empathetic, and more professionally successful. These are the kind of leaders we seek to create at ALA – individuals who want to give back to their communities, their countries and the continent. #GivingTuesday is an opportunity to showcase our community’s emphasis on the spirit of giving back.” Anna Teske, Development Manager.
The 6th annual #GivingTuesday is approaching, and both organizations and individuals will have the chance to help ensure the day is once again a success. On November 28th, 2017, we hope you’ll join individuals and communities across the world in reaching out to help others. We also hope you’ll follow the lead of our ALA alumni and support the future leaders of African Leadership Academy. Make a gift, spread the word, or repost your support for ALA on your social media platforms – every act, no matter how small, makes a difference.
