Welcome to 2018! African Leadership Academy kicked off the year with optimism through our annual Africa Land of Opportunities Day (ALOO) event. In their thank you letter to their fellow students, the ALOO 2018 team wrote:
“We are all gifted in different ways and follow various paths; however, we are united in the same mission of being changemakers in our fields of specialization and in our contribution towards the development of the African continent. This is a mission we hope to set alight in each of our ALA experiences and we hope that we did this a little bit for you through ALOO this year.”
We couldn’t have said it better!
Sadly, this year has already claimed a loss for ALA, South Africa and the world, with the passing of jazz icon Hugh Masekela. As the Father of South African Jazz, Bra Hugh was a close friend of the ALA community, having shared his unique talents at various events, including our Grand Opening.
No one will forget his Graduation speech at ALA in 2014 [WATCH], nor the performance [WATCH] that followed it. Everyone who was there that day sat in awe of both his wisdom and his music. He was scheduled to play at our Decennial Celebrations next month, and will be sorely missed by staffulty and students who were privileged to get to know this visionary socio-political activist and anti-apartheid hero, and his unique music talents.
