African Leadership Academy second year student and #Teens4Wildlife founder, Tiassa Mutunkei (18), spoke passionately about ending the illegal wildlife trade at the 2019 Nature, Environment & Wildlife Filmmakers Congress (NEWF) held in Durban, South Africa from July 14th-18th.
Tiassa, who is also known as the ‘The Elephant Girl’, founded #Teens4Wildlife, a youth movement at the age of 15. The movement is aimed at fighting the activity of poaching and illegal trade in wildlife.
“#Teens4Wildlife is a space for young people to share their thoughts and ideas, explore and discover the magic of our wildlife – then act to protect it! I often say that we will not be the generation that will allow our wildlife to become extinct; we are the generation that will save it,” says Tiassa.
NEWF is the only platform of its kind in Africa, and it creates a permanent niche platform in Africa where Natural, Environmental, Wildlife and Adventure filmmakers, broadcast media stakeholders, scientists and conservationists engage in lively and robust debate, informative panel sessions, workshops, case studies, interactive demonstrations and network whilst contributing towards the growth of this content in the film and television industry.
