Welcoming ALA’s Class of 2024

In August 2024, we welcomed ALA’s 17th class to our campus. This class hails from 32 different countries across the continent, including our very first student from Equatorial Guinea.

Get to know some of the passionate changemakers in ALA’s Class of 2024.

Magda Aboudakika – Egypt

Magda discovered her passion for inclusive learning after participating in the Girls Make program. Inspired, she began teaching electronics and robotics to visually impaired children, helping them build their first robot. Growing up in a less developed area, Magda taught herself robotics and even invented a smart cane for the blind. She envisions a future where her innovations empower people with disabilities across Africa, creating more accessible learning environments and opportunities.

Philip Atere-Roberts – Sierra Leone

Philip is the Manager and Lead Vocalist of a local band he founded to address youth mental health challenges. Realizing many young people had dropped out of school, Philip organized his peers to form a band that encourages positive change. The band has performed three concerts, with more planned. He is also researching child abuse and plans to create a documentary on the topic. Philip is now organizing a national brass band competition to engage schools and raise awareness of mental health issues.

Abigail Wachuka Maina – Kenya

Abigail is a leader known for her academic excellence and community service. She initiated a vegetable garden at a children's home and secured funds for running water. Her leadership extends to her church and various school roles, including Sports Prefect and Junior Chair at the East African Model United Nations Conference. Abigail's achievements include being a RISE Global Winner and a Yale Young African Scholar, highlighting her commitment to social impact and leadership development.

Leopoldo Mosibe Tobe – Equatorial Guinea

Leopoldo is a dedicated student recognized for his leadership and community service. He has initiated clean drinking water and waste disposal projects, gaining respect within his school. Leopoldo also took a stand against gambling at school, showing initiative by reporting it to authorities. He is eager to explore new cultures and education systems, aiming to enhance his leadership and entrepreneurial skills through global exposure and diverse extracurricular activities.
