As we continue to introduce the outstanding students in ALA’s Class of 2024, we’re thrilled to spotlight more young leaders who are driving innovation, showcasing remarkable leadership, and making a lasting impact across Africa. Meet Dan, Jeremy, Longwe, and Bertine—four exceptional members of ALA's 17th class!
Dan Mohamed Abdelbasit '24 (Sudan)
Dan made history as one of the first Sudanese participants in the I CAN Children's Summit by eduSOIL in Dubai, 2021. Despite skepticism about her age, Dan passionately advocated for environmental issues, making a significant impact. Her initiative in Sudan, launched during an economic crisis, focuses on sustainability through recycling, reusing, and reducing waste. Partnering with local industries, she scaled up the production of recyclable bags, empowering her community and promoting eco-friendly practices.
Jeremy Muchilwa '24 (Kenya)
Jeremy, alongside his sister, founded an NGO to combat plastic pollution in Lake Victoria after attending the Virtual Ocean Heroes Bootcamp. He leads the tech side, developing the Ziwa Safi app for efficient trash data collection and WALTER, a drone to remove waste from water. Jeremy's passion for environmental sustainability, programming, and 3D art earned his team a $10,000 grant from National Geographic, showcasing his commitment to innovative environmental solutions.
Longwe Mtonga ‘24 (Zambia)
Longwe is a dedicated climate activist and the youngest African Union Regional Advisor for Southern Africa. At just 14, he launched Zambia’s first child-led podcast, That Action Cause Reaction, tackling critical issues like climate change and children’s rights. Longwe sees himself as part of a new generation driving impactful change, championing children’s rights, and promoting sustainable development. Recognizing that today’s choices shape tomorrow, he is committed to leading efforts toward a safer, more sustainable future.
Bertine Yung '24 (Cameroon)
Bertine Yung envisions a world where everyone has access to clean water, and she’s turning that vision into reality in her community. Using eco-friendly materials, she’s designing an electric water filter while uniting engineers and neighbors to support her mission. Her passion for innovation began in 2018, teaching coding to young girls after competing in the Technovation Challenge. Fearlessly presenting her work to experts and officials, Bertine transforms challenges into extraordinary opportunities driven by compassion and determination.
