Igniting Change: SAIF 2025 Empowers Young Innovators in South Africa

What happens when you give young people the space, support, and confidence to turn their ideas into reality? At this year’s South African Ideas Festival (SAIF), we found out.

Run entirely by ALA students, SAIF isn’t just an event — it’s a movement. Since 2011, it has brought together South African youth, empowering them to reimagine their futures through social entrepreneurship. This year’s festival, themed “Ideas Worth a Shot,” brought together 21 passionate young changemakers, equipping them with the tools, mentorship, and mindset needed to turn their ideas into ventures with lasting impact.

Over the course of the festival, participants dove into hands-on workshops in design thinking, prototyping, and pitching. For many, it was their first time being taken seriously as innovators, moving from raw ideas to real business models. At the heart of SAIF is a powerful belief — that young people don’t need to wait to lead change. They just need the chance to begin.

This year’s festival wouldn’t have been possible without the leadership of the student enterprise behind it and the guidance of Entrepreneurial Leadership Faculty member Nandi Mwgaba, who served as the project supervisor. Together, they ensured that every session, every activity, and every conversation moved participants one step closer to realizing their potential.

SAIF is about impact, making real change in communities. It’s about connection, building networks that extend beyond the festival. It’s about creativity, challenging old ways of thinking and embracing the unknown. And it’s about ambition, pushing ourselves to reach higher and make a difference.

The mission of SAIF is to meet young people where they are and help them thrive in a world full of uncertainty. The vision is to build a network of young leaders ready to confront their communities’ most pressing challenges. This year, that vision felt more real than ever.

With every pitch and every bold idea, SAIF 2025 proved that ideas are, indeed, worth a shot. And sometimes, all it takes is one shot to change everything.
