The ALA Pledge

African Leadership Academy exists to foster lasting peace and shared prosperity in Africa. Each member of the ALA community embarks on a lifelong leadership journey that reflects their passions, their aspirations, their skills, and their commitment to Africa. The lifelong journey from campus to further study and to fulfilling careers of entrepreneurial leadership is supported by those before them, by peers, by staffulty, and by the Academy.

ALA invests in financial assistance and opportunities for students, in enabling pathways for alumni, in fostering networks, in convening communities, and in the development of new knowledge and practices. We exist to enable a community that will power our vision for Africa. While our successes will be achieved collectively, each of us will live a unique trajectory. As such, our individual decisions must be guided by shared commitments.

As aspiring African leaders, we model the behaviours of a peaceful and prosperous society. We give of ourselves, recognizing that doing so amplifies our individual and collective strengths. We choose to be present in African communities, as that presence strengthens the collective. We pay forward the investments that have been made in us for the benefit of future generations.

We invite you to embark on this audacious journey with us, and to make the “ALA Pledge.”

As a member of the African Leadership Academy alumni community, I pledge to enable our mission and vision by:

-Living out the values of the community in my choices and behaviour.

-Supporting the community with my time, talent and resources.

-Investing my time, effort, skills, and energy in Africa and Africans.

-Investing in ALA’s future by contributing at least 1 USD per year towards ALA’s scholarship fund.

The work of our community will be pursued over generations. While we recognize, value and appreciate every individual trajectory, we also declare aspirations for the community as a whole. Together, we will track and celebrate our impact in the following ways:

-As we invest our opportunities into Africa’s future, we expect that most of us will choose to live and work on the continent at key phases of our early, mid-, and late-career lives, recognizing that our presence strengthens our society. At least two thirds of our alumni community will be living and working in Africa at any given time.

-As we apply our entrepreneurial mindset, we will work to harness the energy of the continent’s youth and human capital.

-As we pursue impact across sectors, we will see results in scientific innovation, art, literature, public policy and all others.

-As our network deepens and strengthens, we will invest in civil society and governance as key enablers of transformation.

-As we engage each other in a mutually supportive community, we will recognize our collective strength.

-As we honour the financial investments our community has received, we will invest in ALA’s future as stakeholders in enabling a lasting institution.
