On the 18th of November, Kenya Dejen became the 1st parent chapter to hold an Annual General Meeting (AGM) in line with the ALA Dejen parents constitution and elect office bearers that will steer the Chapter for the next two years. It was a historic day with a representation of about 25 out of 60 parents attending.
Over 30 parents attended from Classes of 2008 to 2017. The election was organised by the Steering committee Founding members in collaboration of the parent engagement team. Parents were elected as officers of the parent chapter till July 2019.
The following were elected as office bearers:

The elections paved way to the realization of a full-fledged office from what was previously ran by a Steering Committee since the parent chapter’s inception.

On 25th November 2017 parent engagement team together with ALA parents from Zimbabwe organised the launch of the ALA Dejen Parents chapter in Harare Zimbabwe. Thirty parents attended the launch with a large contingent from Bulawayo. Parents from Classes of 2008-2017 were excited to learn more about the Association and ways they could support ALA and its alumni and students. The guest speaker was Ms Belinda Munemo, an alumni from ALA’s inaugural class and current trustee of ALA board. Belinda advised the chapter to focus on learning more about ALA’s mission to enable them to better understand their children’s leadership journey. ‘ALA is a ‘hard’ learning experience and I wish there was a parent chapter for my mother to engage with other parents in 2008 when I was there. She would have benefited from other parents’ experiences about ALA and how to better support me.’
Edna Mudzingwa P16, shared some thoughts about why the chapter is important. – ‘The launch provides a platform and opportunity for parents to gain a better understanding of ALA’s vision through interaction and networking. As such parents can also contribute and support to this vision of transforming Africa through use of combined skills, experiences and resources at our disposal.’ Parents signed pledge cards to support ALA’s recruitment and partnership activities, and also committed to support Belinda’s school Reekswoth by referrals. The chapter has since set up a steering committee that will work towards electing officers for the chapter next year. Welcome Dejen Zimbabwe!
