Gemma was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. She completed her undergraduate degree in Fine Arts and a Master’s in Contemporary Curatorial Practice at the University of the Witwatersrand. In her practice-based research, she explores the museum as a pedagogical platform. Gemma is interested in curatorial practice and the ideology of display, specifically focusing on immersive modes of exhibition-making while also investigating the inherent power dynamics held within socially constructed space. Before joining ALA, Gemma ran residency programmes for emerging artists, taught university courses on visual culture and worked as an arts writer – covering the work of artists on the continent and across the diaspora. In her free time, she enjoys attending exhibition openings and meditating.
