Barakaeli Lawuo’ 20 (Tanzania) joined ALA in 2020 from Kibaha Secondary School in Tanzania. Even before joining ALA, Barakaeli had already established himself as a respected leader in his community. He responded to the Tanzanian government’s environmental initiative by producing paper bags as an alternative to plastic, and he also participated in Enlighten, offering mentorship and academic support to young students in his community.
During his two years at ALA, Barakaeli served as a marketing intern and was the Head of Business & Marketing at SAFCorp, the on-campus auditing firm. His identification of key business opportunities led to a 100% increase in SAFCorp’s revenue, a significant factor contributing to his team’s recognition as the Best Student Enterprise of the Year at ALA.
After graduating from ALA, Barakaeli started his undergraduate studies at Virginia Tech as the inaugural recipient of a scholarship for international students endowed by the Cranwell Foundation. This prestigious scholarship not only recognizes his academic and leadership prowess but also opens doors for future generations of international students to pursue their aspirations at Virginia Tech.
