Since 2016, Chevron has been investing in aspiring young leaders pursuing impactful careers in countries where Chevron operates on the continent. These students are pursuing studies in STEM subjects at ALA and continue their education at the tertiary level. To date, Chevron has provided scholarships to 12 students from four countries, and the earliest ALA graduates who received Chevron scholarships are already demonstrating their ability to make a significant impact. Among Chevron's pioneering scholars is Ayotomiwa Akinyele ’16 (Nigeria). Ayotomiwa recently achieved a notable milestone by earning a Master of Science in Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania. Currently, he is actively contributing to the field as a software engineering intern at Google.
In addition to supporting scholarships, Chevron has sponsored ALA's Summer Engineering Academy, a summer program designed for highly motivated and talented high school students aged 15 to 18 who are interested in pursuing careers in STEM. The program aims to develop future African engineers equipped with the skills to drive change on the continent. Participants engage in engineering and leadership practices, collaborating in groups to create and design solutions for important and relevant engineering challenges. The program is led by a team of skilled STEM educators.
ALA is delighted to announce that the Summer Engineering Academy will now be known as the Chevron Engineering Leadership Program, thanks to Chevron's generous support. This support has enabled us to expand the program to reach more students across the continent. Chevron has also agreed to support the final renovations of ALA’s Makerspace. The Makerspace will house the Engineering Leadership Program as well as science subjects in ALA's two-year diploma program.
